Some people believe that all their truck or SUV needs to get through something is a lift and some big tires. The truck in the attached video has that and at least an exhaust, probably more modifications, but still struggles with what appears to be a fairly mild water crossing.
Never do this while off-roading.
People debate what really happened. In the footage, we see the truck driving into the water, which appears to be a river or stream in a beach area (perhaps in Florida?) with sand and palm trees dotting the landscape.
The water is moving at a pretty good pace, but it doesn’t appear to be more than maybe a foot deep. This is the kind of water that quite a few off-roaders can cross without any adjustments being necessary.
Yet the truck gets a little over halfway and simply stops, losing momentum completely. The driver tries to reverse and digs the big tires into the sandy riverbed. Then he tries to drive forward, but without success. At that moment his passenger opens his door and it is clear that they are considering a recovery.
People commenting on the video have pointed out two obvious possible reasons for this failed water crossing, which we think are worth mentioning.
First: lack of speed. When crossing the water, you must enter the water with sufficient speed and keep it constant until you reach the other side. This guy clearly goes in too slow and then tries to shoot while stuck, which doesn’t work because he loses grip. All he has to do is dig himself in.
The other obvious problem is tire inflation. If you’re serious about off-roading, you’ll need beadlock wheels so you can fully air your tires. This is especially true when driving on mud or sand. The tires on this truck look like they are fully inflated, as you would want on the pavement. All that does is cause the tires to sink into the sand, which hurts traction and forward momentum.
It’s true that the man could go easy on the stickers, as some have hilariously pointed out. But we think these two factors are the most likely reasons why this water crossing spilled out and became a recovery operation.
