When I arrived in Cancun in December (2024) and headed north to Costa Mujeres, I was eager to see how SLS Playa Mujeres, the SLS brand’s first all-inclusive resort, would combine style, convenience and the signature SLS buzz. The property recently opened in November 2024 and still needs to iron out a few kinks in terms of service, but that’s often to be expected from a brand new hotel. Having reviewed dozens of Mexico’s top resorts over the years—from boutique boutiques to sprawling five-star enclaves—I’m always curious to see whether a newcomer can deliver on its unique atmosphere. I’m happy to say that SLS Playa Mujeres feels both fresh and familiar, offering a sophisticated beach getaway that stays true to SLS’s design DNA.
A sumptuous introduction
The resort has a lush atmosphere due to the open spaces.
Located in a private gated area of Costa Mujeres, just about a 30-minute drive from Cancun International Airport, SLS Playa Mujeres is set amidst lush greenery and sleek architecture. Living roofs, swaying palm trees and manicured gardens weave a nature-oriented element into the resort’s contemporary silhouette. Despite the tranquil feel, you’re not cut off from the area’s top attractions: the ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres is conveniently close by if you fancy some snorkeling, local cuisine or exploring the island’s vibrant street art.
Inside you’ll see a sleek yet inviting design that reflects SLS’s cosmopolitan roots. Warm wood, airy layouts and thoughtful lighting ensure that the resort feels contemporary without being stark. Add in the friendly staff, and the stage is set for a stylish, easy escape, although there are still a few soft spots as the resort finds its footing.
Pet friendly (with caveats)
Because I always travel with my service dog Poppy, I am especially aware of how the resorts I visit handle pet policies (other than service dog policies). SLS Playa Mujeres allows dogs, but with restrictions: puppies are not allowed in pools or restaurants, even outdoors. If you’re specifically looking for a hotel where pups get five-star pampering, this region has better dog-friendly resorts. But if your vacation is more about the SLS experience, and you want your pup with you in your own space – Poppy loved lounging on our furnished balcony with the sea breeze and taking an early morning run on the beach – then the resort is still the right choice.
Pools, parties and the Privilege lounge
The adult pool at SLS Playa Mujeres.
One of the main draws of a tropical getaway is the pool life, and SLS Playa Mujeres offers multiple options. There’s the vibrant adult-only Privilege lounge, SLS’s third-largest location in the world (after Dubai and Baha Mar). Expect curated music, a stylish crowd and bartenders mixing inventive cocktails all day long. I enjoyed the energetic atmosphere, especially if you’re here with friends or for a bachelor party.
If you prefer less excitement, you can easily slip away to quieter pools further from the main action, or head to the family-friendly pool if you’re traveling with kids. Although the snack selection at the pools could be more extensive, the staff are friendly and attentive, and the cocktails I sampled never disappointed.
A beach for cool days
Although the pools are popular, the resort’s beach offers a more relaxing experience. The resort is located behind a beautiful stretch of bright white sandy beach that flows into clear turquoise water. The sea was also relatively empty of the Sargassum (seagrass) that often plagues Cancun’s beaches. Rows of inviting cabanas and lounge chairs line the shore, and waitstaff drop by to refresh a drink or bring a light bite. It is an excellent place for those who enjoy wading in gentle waves or need time to relax under the Caribbean sun.
If you like a bit of adventure, consider water sports such as paddle boarding or jet ski rentals, or head to Isla Mujeres for a day of exploring. But I admit, there’s something blissful about staying put with a cold mezcal cocktail (there are plenty of premium labels here) and the ocean glistening at your feet.
SLS Elite for an enhanced experience
The rooftop jacuzzi with ocean views in an elite suite.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion or want to experience more luxury, consider upgrading to an SLS Elite room or suite. These properties offer perks such as private lounge access, preferred dining reservations, an exclusive beach area, and personalized check-in. Some rooms span two levels, with private rooftop Jacuzzis and panoramic sea views, perfect for an intimate gathering or a getaway with a group of friends. SLS Elite guests also enjoy butler service, a premium spirits package, airport transfers for extended stays and a complimentary Ciel Spa thermal bath experience. You’ll even get custom reusable water bottles and chic beach bags for use throughout the resort – a subtle touch that emphasizes sustainability and style.
In my opinion, the Elite level is a natural choice for honeymoon couples, bachelorette parties looking for that VIP atmosphere, or for any traveler looking to add a layer of pampering luxury. It means you don’t have to worry about dinner reservations getting stuck during peak times, and the dedicated services make your stay feel much more personal.
18 food and drink destinations
An all-inclusive experience thrives or fails on the food front, and SLS Playa Mujeres aims to impress with 18 restaurants and bars spread across the property. Caracol, led by James Beard Award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega from Puebla, quickly became a highlight for me. I enjoyed hearty Mexican dishes with bold flavors, fresh seafood, and inventive twists on classic recipes.
If you’re craving steak, Union is the resort’s answer to a high-quality steakhouse, with well-prepared cuts of meat and a decent wine selection. Meanwhile, Fi’lia satisfies cravings for handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas, perfectly paired with a smoky mezcal, my personal favorite drink. While I wasn’t able to check out every location, the overall scene is diverse enough to keep most palates satisfied.
Family friendly meets social scene
The view from the balcony of my suite.
One thing I noticed and appreciated about SLS Playa Mujeres is the way it attracts a variety of guests: families, couples, solo travelers and groups of friends. The resort features amenities such as a kids’ club, a dedicated family pool and activities for younger guests, making it a good choice if you’re traveling with children. At the same time, the adults-only areas provide that adult atmosphere when you need a break. During my visit, I saw a destination wedding in full swing, bachelorette parties toasting poolside and families exploring the beach—proof that you can find the pace to suit your mood.
Wellness happiness
Between poolside relaxation, beach walks and late-night cocktails, make time for the Ciel Spa. The bright and soothing design features natural textures that set a relaxing tone. I treated myself to a deep tissue massage and felt my travel tension melt away. The CBD hot stone treatment or a Royal Citrus Ritual also receive good reviews. Groups of friends or couples may want to book treatments together for an extra dose of pampering.
